Solving Connection Quality Problems

Major Factors

Faulty or low-quality modem: Modems are most often the culprit in cases of poor connections. They are either old or of low quality and should be replaced. Having a new computer and/or new modem does not necessarily mean that you have a good quality modem. Many low-quality modems are shipped with new computers today and they don't work very well from the start. Signs of a high quality modem are:

  • V.92 the latest in modem technology
  • 56k speed rating
  • A brand name like Lucent or Intel
  • The modem was purchased individually and not a "no-name modem",
        part of a computer package

  • A new modem is often the solution when dealing with persistent connection issues. Contact GOIN today to set up a free modem test.

Phone lines Phone company equipment and home phone lines also play an important role in your dialup connections and speed. GOIN is very proud of its technology and quality internet service, but "what is between you and us? The phone company and phone lines." Some things that may affect your phone lines and the quality of your connection include:

  • Phone company switching station problems
  • Old phone wires coming into your home
  • Analog phone lines
  • Humidity
  • Phone line noise or inherent static
  • Bad phone jack terminal connections
  • The number of load coils between your home and the switching station
  • Your home phone lines are run from one jack to the next and to so on.
  • Answering and fax machines that are faulty may cause
        your modem to disconnect

  • It should be noted that Your phone company ultimately, has the ability to control and improve the quality of their/ and your telecommunications occurring over their phone lines. Remember, at this time, the phone company may state it is "Only Accountable for Voice Quality Lines" not "Computer Quality Lines". Reporting static in your phone line often results in achieving some help.

    Other Factors

There are many things that you can investigate and attempt to make your connection to GOIN better:

  • Computer needs to reboot: Believe it or not this is the most common cause of connection problems. You should reboot your computer at least once per day. This cleans up many problems and makes your computer run more efficiently and dependably. The best way is to shut it down at the end of the day when you are finished with it.

  • Outlook Express settings Do the disconnects happen when checking email? If so, then there is a setting that tells your computer to hang-up. Open Outlook Express then go to Tools menu then click Options. Next click the Connection tab and make sure both boxes are unchecked - especially "Hang up after sending/receiving". Click OK to apply.

  • Idle timeout If disconnects happen when you computer is left idle then this is normal. Some computers are configured to disconnect if the connection is idle for 20 minutes or longer and our servers will disconnect if your computer is idle for 30 minutes or longer. Since the connection is not being used it will drop off.

  • Call Waiting service If you have call waiting service and it has not been disabled when you get online, then your connection will get disconnected when someone tries to call you. To disable Call Waiting pre-append the dialup number with a *70, (be sure to include the comma) which temporarily turns off Call Waiting while you are online. Of course if you have a V.92 modem and you want to take calls while online then you would not want to do this.

  • Long phone cord If the phone cord running to your computer is longer than 6 ft. and it is the flat ribbon type then it can cause connection difficulties due to line loss. Keep this line as short as possible. If the line must be longer than 6 ft. then use a round, twisted pair cable for your phone cord, which can be up to 300 ft. long.

  • Surge Protector If your phone line runs through the surge protector try by passing the surge protector by plugging the phone line directly in the jack. The phone section of the surge protector is susceptible to connection problems the longer it is in use. Remember the best protection for you modem is to unplug the phone line during storms or when you are going to be out of town.

  • Speed test

Test the actual speed of your connection by visiting
www.getgoin.net/speedtest or a third party test at: http://homepage.eircom.net/~leslie/testpage/testpg56.htm.
